The flexor pollicis longus and the flexor carpi radialis tendons lie outside, but adjacent to, the carpal tunnel and may play a role in median nerve compression if inflamed. Narrowing of the carpal tunnel by inflammation and/or edema of the contents creates compression on the median nerve. This results in symptoms of pain, parasthesia or numbness in the median distribution of the hand, which is often reported to be worse at night. The median nerve sensory distribution is normally described as the palmar surface of the hand, including the first, second, third, half of the fourth digit and the medial two-thirds of the palm. Dorsally, the second, third and half of the fourth digit contain median nerve distribution, but typically not the dorsum of the hand. There are variations of the median nerve cutaneous distribution, including larger surface areas or smaller surface areas than what is discussed as typical.
